Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever was the target of a foiled jihadist-inspired plot involving drone-mounted explosives aimed at attacking politicians, according to government sources cited by AFP on Thursday.
The revelation came shortly after federal prosecutors announced the arrest of three suspects in connection with the case.
The attack targeted the country's politicians, sources close to the Prime Minister confirmed to AFP that De Wever had been identified as one of them.
Belgian foreign minister Maxime Prévot called the news “deeply shocking,” adding: “Gratitude to the security services and the judiciary whose swift action allowed us to avert the worst.”
The federal prosecutor’s office has not disclosed further details about the suspects, their identities, or the stage of the planning. The arrests were part of an ongoing investigation into suspected jihadist activities that authorities say involved plans to use drones rigged with explosives to strike political figures.
The case adds to Belgium’s ongoing national security concerns, with the country remaining on high alert following previous attacks and attempted plots in recent years.
