'Much like Apple has…': Elon Musk again targets Microsoft on Twitter over AI-powered automation

Elon Musk has provided an update on a purely AI-driven software entity called "Macrohard" that his artificial intelligence (AI) company xAI is working to develop. “Macrohard" is a satirical reference to Microsoft that signals the company's ambition to automate software development at scale. Musk confirmed the project's physical launch in a post after an image surfaced showing "MACROHARD" painted on the roof of the Colossus II supercomputer cluster in Memphis.

“The @xAI MACROHARD project will be profoundly impactful at an immense scale,” Musk wrote on X, adding a winking emoji to underscore the tongue-in-cheek nature of the name.

According to Musk, xAI's goal is to create a company that can handle any task short of directly manufacturing physical objects, though it will be able to do so indirectly.

“Our goal is to create a company that can do anything short of manufacturing physical objects directly, but will be able to do so indirectly, much like Apple has other companies manufacture their phones," Musk stated.

What is “MACROHARD”
Announced in August 2025, Macrohard seeks to create a fully AI-driven software company using Grok agents—xAI's AI systems—to simulate the operations of tech giants like Microsoft. The project focuses on tasks such as coding and design without human oversight.

Musk explained why he believed an exclusively AI software company was realistic.

“In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI,” he wrote in an earlier post.

“Join @xAI and help build a purely AI software company called Macrohard. It's a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!," Musk posted to X

While Musk has a history of making proclamations that have not materialised, reports suggest Macrohard may be more than an online joke.

The US Patent and Trademark Office website showed that xAI filed a trademark request for "macrohard" on August 1, 2025. The application requested exclusive use of the Macrohard name for "downloadable computer programs and downloadable computer software."
