BBC fans were slamming the latest episode of Only Connect on Monday (September 1) after one team randomly began singing a popular West End musical song. Host Victoria Coren Mitchellwelcomed The Jive Bunnies as they took on The Sorcerers in a big claim victory on the quiz show. The tournament-type format sees teams compete by finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues.

But just minutes in, the Sorcerers were asked a question about musical Wicked, with a series of clues such as "defying gravity" and "ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space" popping up for the teams to decipher. The team were unable to reach an answer, but host Victoria said "you didn't get a chance to hear the chorus, but if you had, it might have gone...." The team followed the cue and began passionately singing Defying Gravity as Victoria waved her arms like a conductor.

Fans found the whole segment bizarre, taking to X to discuss.

One fan penned: "This should be on after 9 pm. It's bound to scare the kids." Another added: "Well, that was edited to f**k." A player from another team even joined in, before saying: "This won't air?" as Victoria admitted: "Oh it will."

Another chimed in, adding: "Erm that singing was so awkward why did they edit that in! so weird! Editing was weird too? #onlyconnect."

The Sorcerers managed to steal victory in the end with 20 points vs the Jive Bunnies 15.

Only Connect viewers recently that fumed "standards are slipping!" after calling out a question blunder on the show.

Eagle-eyed viewers spotted the answer Victoria said was the correct response to one of the first questions of the episode actually appeared to be wrong.

The host asked one of the teams: 'What is the connection between these apparently random picture clues?'

A picture of British snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan, also known as The Rocket, appeared on screen.

This was swiftly followed by an image of Marvel comic book character Rocket Raccoon.

The players were quick to spot the connection between the two was "rocket", with Victoria soon confirming they were correct.

She revealed the last two images they would have been shown to help them to get to the answer.

These were a sketch of the early steam train Stephenson's Rocket, built nearly 200 years ago, and a photo of some rocket salad leaves.

But viewers at home were adamant the sketch did not show Stephenson's Rocket - but rather another steam locomotive.

One fan raged on X: "First mistake on the new series of BBC Only Connect. This is Locomotion not Stephenson's Rocket."

Another replied to their comment on the social media platform, "And on the very first question too!", while someone else weighed in, adding: "Standards are slipping."
