A mischievous punter managed to steal the show during live horse racing coverage on Saturday. The week-long Galway Festival stands as one of Ireland's premier racing events, featuring seven straight days of Flat and National Hunt action, famous for its spirited atmosphere.
The sixth day of the extended meeting had wrapped up with Kevin Coleman's Thattwilldoso claiming victory in the 1m4f handicap at 6.05pm. RacingTV presenters Fran Berry and Donn McLean were concluding their coverage when, unbeknownst to them, their broadcast was being gate-crashed.
Berry remained oblivious until afterwards when messages began flooding in, alerting him to the background antics.
He captured a screenshot of the footage and shared it on social media with the caption: "Protests about the toilet roll shortage in Galway have intensified".
Top replies included 'cracking selfie', 'some craic' and 'first-time cheekpieces, Fran'.
Berry explained to Mirror Racing: "It was quite noisy by the last race on Saturday with a syndicate-owned horse having won. We were positioned inside the winners' ring and there was a lot of cheering going on.
"As we were doing a wrap we were completely unaware of what happened behind us. As soon as we finished up I got a lot of WhatsApp message with pictures and video of the lad in question.
"It's the nature of Galway, you can see everything and anything. There was no malice, it was just lads on a day out having too good a time. It was all taken in good humour."
He added: "There was no toilet roll shortage by the way, it was just a caption to go with it.
"Galway is very easy going, the three lads looked to be enjoying themselves and no harm was done."
