Good Morning Britain viewers were left outraged following Defence Minister Luke Pollard's appearance on the show. Pollard joined presenters Ed Balls and Charlotte Hawkins on Tuesday's (October 28) edition of the programme, where he outlined Sir Keir Starmer's plans to close all asylum hotels by the end of the parliamentary term.
The government hopes to achieve this by relocating small boat migrants to army barracks in Scotland and the south of England as early as next month.
When pressed on whether the plan was realistic, Pollard said: "Yes it is. The prime minister's been very clear that he wants to see every single asylum hotel closed. We're committed to do so by the end of the parliament but he wants to see them all closed sooner.
"He's asked every single government department to step up and the MOD is doing so. We're in discussions with the Home Office about a number of sites. It will be for them to announce the precise location in due course."
However, viewers were left frustrated by his remarks as they flocked to social media to voice their complaints.
One raged: "They are only looking into alternatives as a priority as the amount of money that is being thrown down the drain has come to light. A home secretary fighting tooth and nail to keep them in hotels not too long ago to now they say they are listening to the public.... Well we all know that is a barefaced lie. Yeah... They were looking to close the use of hotels by next parliament to now they will do this in a year."
Slamming the government, another hit out: "These illegal immigrates should be deported immediately, not housed in any barracks or otherwise, they are deflecting from the real issue which is there is no room at the INN. GOVERNMENT are the issue also get them OUT."
An additional viewer said: "How much will it cost renovating, staff, security to keep them locked up, why are we taking so long processing & deporting. They can't all stay here indefinitely, our towns & cities full now so where do they go after the camps. No ID so how do you deport. Severe deterrent needed."
Others accused the government of caring more about illegal immigrants than those who are homeless in the UK.
One fumed: "Few things about this; 1. Why don't they care about our homelessness issue as much as they care about accommodation for migrants? 2. Why are these sites always near the homes of 'ordinary people' and never near the homes of any MP or Govt Minister?"
Another echoed: "Why should they go to the barracks when British people are homeless!! Why can't you just send them home when they arrive on the boats?"
