President Donald Trump seemed to crack on Truth Social Sunday as he condemned the media for reporting on his apparent pro-Russia stance following his Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin.
Instead of pursuing a ceasefire agreement as originally planned, Trump said he would try to convince Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky to concede land to the Kremlin in order to put an end to the more than three-year war.
Critics saw this outcome as an obvious bow to Putin, but the president disagreed.
"It's incredible how the Fake News violently distorts the TRUTH when it comes to me. There is NOTHING I can say or do that would lead them to write or report honestly about me." Trump wrote on social media.
"I had a great meeting in Alaska on Biden's stupid War, a war that should have never happened!!!"
Zelensky is set to meet with the US president on Monday in the White House, along with other European leaders, to discuss the details of Trump's meeting with Putin.
The leaders gave a joint statement to the media following a nearly three-hour meeting, but then left without answering any questions. "There's no deal until there's a deal," Trump said shortly after the summit.
The president claimed to have made "some great progress" with Putin, but he provided few specifics, leaving the world to speculate as to what those advancements might be.
"We didn't get there," he subsequently stated, leaving the room without answering any questions from the hundreds of reporters who had assembled.
Even though Trump had less at risk than Russia or Ukraine during these negotiations, it nonetheless damaged his reputation both at home and abroad after he previously stated that there was only a 25% chance that the summit would fail.
Furthermore, the president had to endure the seeming humiliation of remaining mute while Putin gave lengthy opening statements to begin the news conference that never happened.
