As winter begins, pollution levels across North India, particularly in Delhi and surrounding areas, are sharply rising. The increase in toxic particles in the air poses a serious threat to respiratory health, especially for asthma patients. These tiny pollutants directly affect the lungs, often triggering asthma attacks and worsening symptoms. Doctors are therefore advising asthma patients to remain extremely careful during this period and to always keep their inhalers handy.
Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Professor in the Department of Medicine at GTB Hospital, Delhi, explains that pollution acts as a major asthma trigger during winter. Asthma patients should wear N95 masks whenever they step outdoors and avoid exposure to polluted air as much as possible. He emphasizes that patients should never leave home without their inhaler, as an asthma attack can occur suddenly. It’s also advisable to stay indoors during peak pollution hours and to practice preventive measures such as steam inhalation in the morning. While cleaning or dusting the house, wearing a mask is equally important to avoid irritation from dust particles.
Diet and Lifestyle Care
Dr. Kuldeep also highlights the importance of diet during this season. Asthma patients should include foods rich in vitamin C and antioxidants—such as amla and lemon—in their meals. These help strengthen immunity and reduce inflammation in the airways. Additionally, regular breathing exercises and yoga practices like Anulom-Vilom and Kapalbhati can improve lung capacity and control breathing. However, it’s best to consult a doctor before starting any new exercise routine.
Why an Inhaler Is Essential
Keeping an inhaler within reach is crucial for every asthma patient, especially when pollution levels are high. Exposure to smoke, dust, or polluted air can cause a sudden bout of coughing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. Using an inhaler immediately can prevent these symptoms from escalating into a severe asthma attack. It serves as the first line of defense and ensures the patient gets quick relief when needed.
Warning Signs to Seek Medical Help
Asthma patients should visit a hospital immediately if they experience any of the following symptoms:
-
Persistent breathlessness
-
Rapid breathing, especially at night
-
A significant drop in oxygen levels
-
High fever accompanied by coughing
