England star suffers broken hand in strange accident - but hopes to return vs Latvia

England defender Dan Burn missed England's 3-0 win over Wales after breaking a bone in his hand. Burn was left on the bench by Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel as England eased to a comfortable win on Thursday night, with goals from Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Bukayo Saka.

The giant centre-back, given his head at international level by Tuchel, revealed post-match that he broke a bone in Newcastle United's 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest. And while he was eager to get on at Wembley, he was instead saved for England's trip to Riga to face Latvia in the World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.

Burn has been spotted at St George's Park this week with his hand strapped, but insisted that he is fine and still wanted to face Craig Bellamy's side. Instead, he sat it out, but is likely to return in Riga. And certainly, it won't stop him facing his old club Brighton & Hove Albion when he returns to domestic duty a week on Saturday.

Burn told Chronicle Live how the incident occurred during the win over Forest, in a bizarre incident as he tried to grab an opponent. He said: "I actually broke my hand, I don't even know how I did it, I think I went to grab someone and then I felt a crack. It was early in the second half so I went for the scan and I have seen a specialist.

"I've been told I can play with it. I am ready for Latvia, I am ready for Newcastle and I'd have been ready to play tonight."

A serious injury to Burn is the last thing Newcastle would have needed after losing Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Yoane Wissa to longer term problems.

Burn said: "I will not be missing any time for a broken hand! This is nothing, I have had worse injuries than this. I am ready to go and ready to play."

Despite not getting on Burn watched on as his team-mate Anthony Gordon had an excellent game beneath the famous Wembley arch. Burn said: "It was a really good win, the last two games is just what we needed. You can see the identity that the manager has brought in.

"Everybody is fighting for each other and the first half an hour I thought we were brilliant. It was really, really good. Now the thing for us is to keep that going all game. At 3-0 up we probably took our foot off the gas a little bit.

"We now look forward to the World Cup qualifier in Latvia now."
